Indus River Gorge, Ladakh
August 2009
After adjusting to the high altitudes in Leh, we climbed into some Land Rovers and headed east, up the Indus River Gorge. The landscape was that of mostly bare granites, carved into a spectacularly deep gorge. We saw many gravel terraces and perched fans, some a few hundred meters above the river bed, indicating wetter times and higher water levels. We observed a series of ocean floor and sub-ocean rocks, wedged up under the extreme tectonics of the region. We enjoyed hot springs and a cozy, Nepali-catered campout under brilliant night skies at 15,000 feet.
See the hot springs bubbling out into the Indus River. Where are all the hippies to make rock-lined pools for soaking?
